The EMDG provides taxable grants to exporters of up to a maximum of $200,000 per annum, by way of a re¬imbursement of 50% of ‘eligible ex¬port promotion activities’ expenditure above a $10,000 threshold.
The EMDG is designed to assist Australian entities exporting goods and services to gain ac¬cess to foreign markets, through ensuring that sufficient money is available for marketing and promotion expenses.
The recent (September 2008) Mortimer Review, ‘Winning in World Markets’, cited that new exporters are more likely to become regular exporters, and have more chance of developing in an export market, when in receipt of the EMDG.
The assessment and administration of the EMDG is undertaken by the commercially fo¬cused government agency, Austrade. 2008–09 application forms are available for download on the Austrade website (www.austrade.gov.au), along with information on eligibility criteria, payment dates and other information.
Austrade provides support and seminars to assist exporters with the application process as it is quite involved, with information required on business and expense types that can be com¬plex to interpret. For the first time applicant, the assistance of a taxation or business advisor that has experience in this area may prove valuable. 2008–09 grant applications must be lodged in the period 1 July 2009 to 30 November 2009.
