Final word from the outgoing President of the Network

Final word from the outgoing President – July B2B in Canberra

If one believes the hype in the press and the musing of politicians and economists we perhaps should all be staying in a holding pattern until the ‘real’ recession is over.   It is apparently not enough for us to avoid a ‘technical’ recession to have some positive commentary.  So maybe in my final spin in this spot I would like to offer some optimism moving forward.  We all know at the national level that exports pulled our economy into positive growth.  This is not surprising to those who are involved in exporting and see the caliber of our exporters.  Their passion and belief is to be admired.

Over the last few months I have spoken to a number of businesses in the region about the impact of the global financial crisis and their thoughts about the future.  I also visited the United States and talked with local business owners in New York and Los Angeles. There is no doubt that in some areas the financial crisis has hit people for a six including some of our exporters.

However one thing I have noticed is exporters in this region have planned for the future.  Some businesses are flourishing in the current climate and others have been agile enough to restructure and change to continue their exporting dreams.  Businesses such as Beyond Business Connections, Sentinel Pty Ltd, Inland Trading, Compucat Research and Splatter have all reported growth and/or new or renewed contracts.  In fact the financial crisis has offered new opportunities which they have or are planning to take advantage of. Perhaps an advantage of our exporting community is the closeness of the network and the willingness to share information.     Maybe the rhetoric here is not as relevant as that in our overseas markets?

On a final note I would like to thank the sponsors, supporters, and members of the Exporter’s Network for their contributions over the past years.  In particular Jenny Brown, Ian Sanders and Brooke Anderson who provided the real drive for the Network.  The continued support of the ACT Government is integral to the success of our export community and it was pleasing to see this commitment continue in the last budget.

I would like to wish my successor Brent Juratowitch well and trust that this network continues to be a leading example of how people can share and work together to achieve a common goals and success.
The ACT Exporters’ Network is proudly supported by the ACT Government, Canberra Business Council, the Centre for Customs and Excise, St George Bank and AusIndustry.
