Austrade US Public Sector Mission to Washington

Explore the US market. Meet key influencers. Engage potential partners.

Austrade is inviting exporters to participate in its US Public Sector Mission to Washington during May 2011. This mission will allow participants to gain direct market insight into what is often referred to as the largest single customer globally – the US Government.

For companies looking to start selling to the public sector or expand existing business, this trade mission is a great opportunity – the US Austrade team, market experts, and potential customers will guide you through the complex and often-costly process of selling to the US public sector.

This mission will allow you to:

  •  Understand the structure of the US public sector, procurement strategy, buying cycles/patterns, contracting, implementation, market engagement strategies, and more.
  •  Network and engage in discussions with government officials, industry leaders, sector specialists, key influencers, integrators and experts.
  • Learn about opportunities outside of Washington – with state, local governments, Native American tribal land and US territories, including Guam.
  • Participate in a tailored one-on-one business matching program with prospective customers, partners, and end users.

Doing Business in Singapore Breakfast

Last week Canberra’s exporters were privileged to hear Carol Cooke (CIC Group) and Brent Juratowich (Recruitment Systems) share their extensive experiences doing business in Singapore.

Speaking at the ACT Exporters’ Network breakfast, held at  Kamberra Wine Company in Lyneham, Carol and Brent highlighted the advantages of exporting to Singapore, as well as some things to watch out for!

Carol talked about some surprises she encountered when first winning contracts in Singapore, but explained that overall the CIC Group has experienced positive outcomes.  Carol’s advice for those thinking about doing business in Singapore, as with any market, included making sure that exporters thoroughly research culturally-specific business practices, the contract and distributors, but highlighted that while in Singapore, the friendly and hospitable people, the coffee, the food, and the shopping all helped make up for any hiccups!

Brent spoke of the importance of building relationships, and his experiences of working with an Agent in Singapore, which requires research to ensure that you find the right agent for your business. Brent also advocated the value of getting professional advice on the best type of legal agreement to cover your relationship and understanding the ‘bottom line’, he also suggested it is important to have someone who knows the players in the industry.

Carol and BrentIn line with the Network’s current focus on our local region, Brent advocated markets like Singapore as they are easy to travel to and to get around.  Like Carol, Brent noted that Singapore boasts great people, coffee and food.  The negative of these positive attributes, however, is that Singapore is a very competitive market where a lot of people are pitching against you so your innovation, quality and design need to be strong.

As usual, the breakfast also gave exporters, export supporters and Network sponsors to join in the discussion following the presentations and ask questions, as well as share some of their own experiences.

The next Network breakfast is being planned for April 2011, and will be looking at working in emerging markets, such as PNG, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste.

Malaysia and Brunei Briefing

This morning a privileged group of exporters shared breakfast with Paul Martins, Austrade’s Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner for Malaysia and Brunei. Mr Martins gave participants an overview of the current economic and business climate in Malaysia and Brunei, as well as providing individual businesses with valuable advice and contacts in the region.

Participants heard how the Honourable Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, has made changes to both industry and government to help Malaysia on its way to achieve developed nation status.  Mr Martins noted that exporters have benefited from these changes in a number of ways, including the liberalisation of services and the relaxation of the the need for foreign companies to have at least 30% Malay ownership and that opportunities continue to arise in Malaysia for Australian investors and exporters.

Mr Martins also offered advice on exporting more generally.  He highlighted the need to manage expectations with agents and distributors, and emphasised the importance of effective communication.  Simple strategies such as being aware of different time zones and working hours; using SMS rather than email to keep in touch; and making regular visits to markets so the relationships can be built through face-to-face meetings were all used as examples of ways to improve communication.

Women In Global Business Network is seeking your input

The Women in Global Business (WIGB) Network, which was officially launched at the Australian Export Awards on the 1st December 2010, is a new joint initiative of the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) with State and Territory Governments to encourage, advance and support Australian women in achieving international business success.  As a Territory stakeholder, Chief Ministers Department (CMD) will work with Austrade and other State and Territory counterparts to create a strong national network of female exporters through the provision of support, referrals, information, training and connections internationally, with the ultimate objective being to increase female participation in international trade.  In the ACT context, the Women in Global Business Initiative will be particularly beneficial to a number of ACT female exporters given there are currently no targeted programs in this jurisdiction.

A National Manager has been appointed to deliver this two year initiative under the guidance of the steering committee which Business and Industry Development (CMD) is a part of.  On 17 and 18 February the committee will meet to establish a delivery plan for the next two years. As such  BID is seeking feedback from Network members including female staff of Network members, on what the priorities for ACT female exporters may be. This is an opportunity to provide the steering committee with some input on areas of support required for ACT female exporters and how we can tap into some existing programs.   If you are interested in providing some feedback please contact Laura Hartley either via email at laura.hartley@act.gov.au  or phone 62053051.

Incoterms course a great success!

Dianne Tipping, Marita Corra, Cindy Hammond & Tania Olinder

Members of the local export community today enjoyed learning about the latest updates to the Incoterms used in export and import contracts.  Dianne Tipping, a Director with the Australian Institute of Export (AIEx), shared her extensive experience today in highlighting changes included in Incoterms® 2010 .

Dianne reminded participants that using Incoterms helps buyers and sellers articulate who is responsible for what, and by using universally recognised trade terms, there is less risk of misinterpretation and disputes between buyers and sellers.

Ernst & Young again showed their support the ACT Exporters’ Network by hosting the workshop at their beautiful new offices in Ernst & Young House – thank you Ernst & Young.
